THE ASHA PROJECT - CHANDIGARH, INDIA
Last updated July 2011

Global Compassion has recently partnered with another trust to help establish a new eduction project for children living in the slums of the city of Chandigarh, India. India has the world’s largest number of children aged between 5 and 19, currently understood to be in excess of 450 million, of which only 225 million are in education. For children in the slums of Chandigarh many have little hope of a formalised education of any kind. They have no experience of sitting at a desk, holding a pencil, responding to a teacher or even wearing a uniform.

The Asha Project rents some basic facilities for 30 children from the slums, aged 4/5, to attend ‘school’, daily. Here they are taught basic education and life skills to aid integration into the school system as well as being fed healthy, nutritious meals.

The project will be a replicable, pioneer model which accords with recent changes in the Indian national education policy, which now makes school mandatory for all children.
