DISASTER RELIEF - HAITI

On Tuesday 12 January 2010 at 16:53 local time an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. Estimates of the number of people killed in the disaster are now over 200,000 with the epicenter of the quake being close to the densely populated capital, Port-au-Prince. With homes, businesses, government buildings and infrastructure damaged, recovery is likely to be a long process for what was already the poorest nation in the western hemisphere.

Global Compassion has been working with a partner organisation, which was operating in Haiti prior to the quake. Together, they have been focusing their relief effort on the people of the island of La Gonave which lies just off the coast near the epicentre of the quake and was devastated by the disaster. The generous donations of our supporters have supplied food and shelter for over 300 families in the months following the earthquake. Over 500 school children have also been regularly receiving one meal per day as the community embarks on the long process of reconstruction.
